In 1990, I embarked on my first hunting trip beyond the borders of Pennsylvania. An antelope hunt in eastern Montana was an impulsive purchase at an SCI chapter banquet. Little did I know at the time that this adventure would become the portal to a lifetime of hunting and, eventually, a lifetime of documenting those adventures.

For some reason, I decided to keep a journal of that first trip. What began as a simple diary eventually became a discipline that became a foundation of my future hunting excursions. Decades later, I realized that I had accumulated volumes of journals that provided a detailed chronicle of my adventures, preserving memories and details that otherwise would have been lost to the natural passage of months and years.

I have always had a passion for writing and storytelling. With encouragement from my wife, along with my retirement from the financial services industry, I decided to turn those journals into a book that chronicled my hunting travels and my journey of service to Safari Club International.

An Unexpected Journey

In 2025, using my collection of hunting journals as a foundation, I published An Unexpected Journey, a collection of memorable hunting stories that marked my journey around the world.

Retirement also gave me the opportunity to pursue another passion: painting. I painted the image featured on the cover of An Unexpected Journey. The inspiration came from a 2009 brown bear hunt in southeast Alaska, where I photographed my guide, the late Otto Kulm, as he led us up a stream off Orca Inlet.

That painting was published as a limited edition of signed and numbered prints. A small number of prints remain available. Please visit the Shop page for details.

Echoes of the Wilderness

Echoes of the Wilderness was published in 2026.

Over the years, I have been incredibly fortunate to meet and hunt with some of the most extraordinary hunters in the world. I decided to create a project that would allow these remarkable individuals to share one of their favorite hunting stories.

Twenty-three hunters accepted my invitation, and the result is a spellbinding collection featuring some of the most accomplished and notable hunters in the world. Their stories span multiple continents and a remarkable variety of species, offering readers an opportunity to experience the challenges, excitement, humor, and unforgettable moments that unfolded in the wilderness.

The cover artwork was created by John Banovich, one of the world’s most prolific wildlife artists. John is also featured in the book, sharing the story of an extraordinary Cape buffalo hunt with a bow. It is an adventure you will not want to miss.

The Journey Continues

I continue to write articles and stories that are periodically published in hunting journals, and I have now begun work on my third book.

While the content and substance of the book continue to evolve, I hope to have something new ready for publication in 2027. As with every adventure, the journey is still unfolding.

The Importance of Keeping a Journal

I encourage every hunter to keep a journal and document their journeys.

Technology makes it easier than ever to record our experiences, but keeping a meaningful journal still requires time, discipline, and commitment. I promise you, there will come a day when the mountains seem steeper, the air feels colder, and the energy required to tackle the elements begins to subside.

It is during those years that the adventures of the past become the treasures of today.

There is something special about sitting in a comfortable chair, perhaps with your favorite beverage nearby, and opening an old journal. The words, photographs, and memories can transport you back to distant mountains, remote camps, challenging climbs, and unforgettable moments. A journal allows you to relive the pursuits that helped shape your life and preserve them for generations to come.
